KIU, the first and only university which offers Master of Science in Nursing in Sri Lanka with the accreditation and recognition of the University Grant Commission. Internationally, the professional requirement to practice as a nurse is a degree within the discipline of nursing. Therefore, in the global context, nursing administration, nursing management, advanced practice in nursing and academic positions in nursing education require post graduate qualified nurses. In this regard, KIU has recognized the vacuum in this sphere of nursing and the increasing demand for such a program which aggravates year by year with continual passing out of nursing graduates from various universities of Sri Lanka. Moreover, by the time KIU nursing graduates will be passed out, it is imperative to pave the path for them to continue further studies at higher level. In this context, the Department of Nursing of the KIU strongly believe that a Masters of in Nursing (with course work and a research component) program is an essential, timely need for the country.

The postgraduate degree program has been designed to prepare graduate nurses with advanced knowledge and skills required to advanced clinical practice, leadership and management in professional nursing, excellence in teaching, and development of empirical knowledge in nursing for the advancement of the profession and evidence based practice in nursing.
